DR. DELEEUW: There are different kinds of breast lifts. There is what we call a paraareolar breast lift in which tissue is taken out around the areola, a breast implant is placed, and the tissue is closed leaving a scar that goes all the way around the areola. There is also another kind of breast lift in which the nipple and areola is moved higher on the chest, the breast is reshaped, with or without a breast implant, and the scar goes around the areola, and then straight down under the breast. It stays on the breast and does not go onto the chest wall and is referred to as a lollipop incision. Some patients who require a very extreme breast lift will require that the nipple and areola remain attached to tissue which arises from the bottom of the breast. Sometimes this may result in a scar with a short transverse limb in the crease under the breast. All of these operations provide significant improvement in the breast’s shape and / or size, and are good tradeoffs for the problems that bother the patient.
