DR. DELEEUW: When a woman comes to see me about breast augmentation I'm going to tell her about the different kinds of implants. Basically there are two types, saline implants and now silicone gel implants are available again. Silicone gel implants have a different feel from saline. They're a more natural homogeneous feel. They ripple less than saline implants and they have a little bit more natural appearance, at least in the early stages following breast augmentation. They probably are the best implant for patients who have very little breast tissue and very little subcutaneous fat. On the other hand, saline implants have been used for many years and many, many women have had saline implants with excellent results. If a saline implant leaks it’s just saltwater, the same type of material that we give people intravenously and patients just absorb it and it’s usually quite easy to change the implant. If a woman has a little bit of subcutaneous fat and some breast tissue there usually is very little difference between the result with a saline implant and a silicone gel implant.
